Just as a homeowner would decorate a room in their house or decorate a patio or deck, they also decorate their garden as well. A garden is merely an extension of the home it is a place where many spend time entertaining and relaxing with friends much like they would in a living room or dining room. As such, the garden is beautified in much the same manner as is the interior of the home. This beautification comes to life in the form of trees, lawns, plants, shrubs, birds and other living creatures but may also be enhanced by a number of additional outdoor garden accents and décor.

There are many types of outdoor garden décor that will accent your garden just as there are types of interior decorations. Most decorations are typically reserved for the interior of the home however grass, plants, flowers and ornaments are considered to be used as exterior decorations. More innate garden accents are used to extend the interior design to the exterior in order to increase the aesthetics of the garden environment. These exterior forms of garden decoration can not only be enjoyed by people passing by your home but also by your visiting guests or just by yourself while relaxing on your porch or even by gazing out a window of your home into your garden. Below are a few or the many types of garden décor to consider for your garden.

Birdbaths and Bird Feeders

Birdbaths and bird feeders work not only add to the landscaping of your garden but can also provide for the hobby of bird watching. They not only give the birds a meal but also refreshing water as well. Birds also help control destructive insects in your garden therefore birdbaths and bird feeders should always be a welcome accent to any garden.

These forms of decor are even considered a necessity in some gardens where areas of top soil do not exist. An apartment complex may be a good example where a balcony or deck is only available as your garden area. Planters and containers also make your garden mobile since you can use your garden trolley to move the plants around or even take them with you when you move. Even a window box falls into this category and can be utilized when space is very limited. Attractive planters are made in all different shapes and sizes and come in concrete, fiberglass or plastic and can be used to add depth, dimension and height in any garden.

Adding relaxing furniture can solve the problem even if it is in the form of a park bench under a shade tree or a hammock strung between two trees. Garden arbors, also know as archways or trellis’s serve to break up the landscape of a garden. Various types of vines and other climbing plants can be added to enhance the look of these traditional garden accents.

The possibilities are practically endless when it comes to garden decoration. Other garden accents to consider are wind chimes which provide a soothing sound as the wind rustles through the garden. Also garden lights and lanterns add an elegant touch to any garden. Solar powered lights and lanterns are a good choice since they can be positioned almost anywhere as long as they are exposed to sunlight during the daylight hours. Lastly, a rock garden is also a possibility which can add a personal touch to your garden. Just arrange the rocks in a certain area of the garden and rotate in various rock plants and flowers until you achieve the look you want.

Simple Patio Gardening Tips You can use to Transform Your Garden Patio into a Masterpiece!

Patio Gardening is much like the painting of a picture. Your childhood art teacher had probably taught you that a good picture should have a chief point interest and the rest of the points simply go to make the central idea more beautiful. Basically, all elements other than the central element serve to form a setting or a back drop. So in patio gardening there must an overall picture in the mind of the gardener of what is desired after the project is completed.

Patio gardening also has one distinct advantage over other forms of gardening in that you can plant your garden patio right in the middle of a place where you normally spend time relaxing. Your patio or deck may be a place where you have barbeques or may be a gathering place for outdoor entertaining with friends or just a place to spend a quiet afternoon or evening. So why not use a garden to decorate your patio or deck.

Patio gardening is also known as container gardening since most of the plants on a deck or patio are normally grown in planters. Keep in mind your patio garden should be placed in an area that will receive six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. Another element to consider is the wind. Containers and planters must be placed in such a manner to prevent the wind from blowing the plants off the patio or deck. This is especially a concern for second floor or higher patio’s or balcony’s.

Another point to consider when designing your garden patio is using plants to add more privacy or block an unattractive view. You can accomplish this by using tall or wide plants, trees and shrubs in strategic areas of the patio, deck or balcony. A trellis may also be added to block the view you wish to control then add attractive climbing plants or vines.

Potted plants can add a special charm to your garden patio. Practically any place that potted plants can be viewed close-up they provide special interest and appeal. Attractive containers used for patio gardening come in all shapes, sizes and materials. However, the most important ingredient in patio gardening is a high quality sterilized potting soil. It should be sterilized to ensure no fungus or insects are present that may infest your garden patio.

The soil should be absorbent enough to hold sufficient moisture and nutrients and light enough to allow for good drainage and air circulation. You can buy a good pre-mixed potting soil or you can mix your own soil for your patio garden. Just add equal portions peat moss, vermiculite and perlite. Mixing your own soil for also gives you the advantage of adding timed release fertilizer pellets to the mix to ensure your plants become established as quickly as possible. Timed release fertilizer is sold from 3 months to over a year in release time so purchase a product that suits your patio gardening needs.

For example, perennial herbs, trees and shrubs would require the longest release time. Short season plants like annual flowers and vegetables would need the shortest fertilizer release time. Be sure to choose a fertilizer high in nitrogen for leafy green plants and one high in phosphorous for flower and fruit bearing plants.

Depending on the climate where you perform your patio gardening along with the season of the year will determine your plants watering requirements. During the hot summer months plants will need more frequent watering. Smaller containers also need more frequent watering since they will dry out quicker in a garden patio.

However, even containers as large as 5 gallons will need to be watered every 3 to 4 days. Cactus and succulents are an exception to the rule and only require weekly watering. You may want to consider investing in an automatic watering system. Battery operated timers can turn on your sprinkler or irritation drip emitters for preset times and you can then discontinue hand watering. Lastly, it is important to remember to always water before sun up or at night. This will allow the water to soak deep into the root area of the soil and avoid the sun from evaporating water from the upper levels of the soil.

A common problem in patio gardening is that container plants have a limited amount of soil and growing space. If conditions of the soil deteriorate for some unknown reason the plants grow will be stunted or the plant will die. In an effort to keep container plants healthy it is important to identify soil problems and correct them if possible.

One of the most common soil problems is a build up of salt in the soil. Salts are deposited in the soil from the use of tap water and fertilizers and will accumulate over time. This condition is evident by a white crust on the soils surface and on the rims and sides of the containers. It is best to just remove the plant from the container and clean as much of the soil off the roots as possible and replant in a fresh potting soil mix.

Another area of concern in your garden patio is not enough drainage which produces a soggy condition in the soil. Again the soil should be removed and replace with a mix which provides better drainage. Moreover, it is advised to regularly change out the soil in all of your containers to avoid other soil issues like fungus and insects living in the soil and harming the roots.

With a little imagination and regular maintenance your patio gardening efforts will pay off with years of enjoyment. Patio gardening is a fun hobby that can be enjoyed by the entire family. With some patience and practice growing plants, tree and shrubs outdoors in containers can be achieved in your own garden patio.

Learn How to Add Depth and Dimension as well as Shapes and Colors to Small Gardens in Order to Create the Illusion of a Larger Garden.

Small gardens demand special attention in terms of specific types of plants. Your overall goal should be to create a small garden that has a large feel about it. Plant shapes, colors and sizes all play an important role in creating an impression of a larger more spacious garden than what really exists. It is best to use only two to three overall colors and try to use the same shade within the colors selected. A common mistake when establishing small gardens is not having an overall proportion from plant to plant. This does not mean that small gardens are restricted to small plants. It means you need to stay with in the boundaries of the space you have to work with. As an example, if you live in a group of tall apartment buildings your small garden will be surrounded by tall walls or other structures. In this case, using a series of small trees or shrubs as a background to your garden will work well.

It is also best to consider using the same plant, tree and shrub varieties in order not to overwhelm the look of small gardens. Using many varieties make small gardens to busy. Therefore, the trick is to use similar plant varieties to create that lush garden look and feel. In other words, plant the same “species” of plants, tree and shrubs instead of a number of different “types” of the plants, trees and shrubs. Another technique for planting in small gardens is to place the darkest colors and highest textured plants in the foreground and then place lighter colors and textures in the background. This will create an illusion of depth which is needed by most small gardens. In other words, darker plants that are small in stature should be in front and larger lighter plants in the back.

Another element to consider with small gardens is to add dimension whenever possible. A small garden is normally confined to straight lines, straight borders, straight beds as well as straight walkways. When you view small gardens that have been designed mostly of straight lines, you can see the whole garden in just one glance. This makes the small garden look cramped, uninteresting and confined. Planting a small garden that winds and curves its way through an area will make the garden unravel and naturally look and feel larger. A winding flower bed, a curved brick vegetable area or a plant lined walkway will add that ingredient of dimension as well as the look and feel of more open spaces. In addition, adding layers or levels to small gardens is an additional technique to adding depth. With multiple levels you can add various themes all in one area with each level or layer presenting a different theme. You can not only add dimension and depth to small gardens but also give them some texture as well by adding wood and rock in and around retaining walls and walkways.

Making small gardens more appealing to you and your guests is also fairly simply. This may be accomplished by adding garden accents or garden décor throughout the garden area. For example, you can plant one color or shape of plants all in one area or use decorative rocks and wood fixtures to create a colleague effect. Also, displaying a small fountain or rock water fall in the background will help to give a small garden an uncluttered look. It is important when using garden accents and décor to keep all elements of the same type or of a related theme. Each element of décor will compliment the other and thus keep the small garden from looking too cluttered

The ingredients of small garden design are endless. From shapes, colors and size to textures, dimensions and depth all factors come into play. Normally when you read about garden design it is related to a garden that covers acres of land. However, as you have just seen small gardens are not as limiting as one may have thought. Some advantages of small gardens are that you have more control over the details as well as less maintenance and still receive the enjoyment and relaxation that a garden brings.

So Im having troubles finding good places to dig. So far, the only place i think might work is up against the front of my house, so there is shade there half day, its about 3 ft wide, and 10ft long. The color palette im thinking of contains orange, scarlet, and purple accents. Do you have any garden plans that would fit- or any types of flowers that you find grow nicely in partial shade?

I’m 13 on mom’s account. I’m redoing my room an right now as unnoticeable as it is the bed, as the focal point ties the room together. My walls are turquoise and two accent walls of cream and (even though I’m not a girly-girl, it goes with the nature theme) will have a hand painted (maybe, probably not if it turns out bad) flower, it’s more cartoon-ish (but still beautiful) otherwise it would look like a dead flower, lol.

Thx and Bye !!! =D
PS sorry that the last one didn’t work, but I made sure these ones did this time so things should be good, thx again, bye =D
